Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable medication that’s wildly popular for smoothing facial wrinkles and fine lines. The active component of the injectable is derivative of a toxin produced in nature called botulinum toxin.

When your provider precisely injects it in small amounts, the toxin blocks your nerve signals from reaching your muscles and telling them to move, thus smoothing away wrinkles.

You can get Botox injections repeatedly every few months in order to continue enjoying your results, but it’s possible for the effect to weaken the more you get them.

If this happens, CSC Steil Dermatology also offers Xeomin®, an injectable drug that uses another derivative of botulinum toxin to get similar results.

What can Botox do?

By far, the most popular use for Botox is cosmetic. Men and women everywhere feel that a few well-placed injections make them look more youthful and boost their confidence.

However, wrinkles aren’t the only condition that Botox treats. At CSC Steil Dermatology, you can get Botox injections to treat:

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Mouth wrinkles
  • Chin dimples
  • Neck cords
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Botox’s list of applications is always expanding. If the team at CSC Steil Dermatology thinks it could be an appropriate addition to your treatment plan, they’ll let you know how it could help you.

How long do the results of Botox last?

After your Botox injection appointment, you can expect to wait for several days to a week before you see the full effect. In some cases, it takes even longer to kick in. Once your results appear, however, they typically stay for at least three months and up to six.

Am I a good candidate to get Botox injections?

Before you begin getting the injections, you’ll need to attend a consultation at CSC Steil Dermatology to review your medical history, current medications, and goals for treatment.

You might be a great candidate for Botox or Xeomin if you:

  • Are 18 or older
  • Are under age 65
  • Are generally healthy
  • Aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients
  • Don’t have a milk allergy
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic goals and expectations
  • Don’t have a chronic nerve condition

The team will advise you to stop taking any medications and supplements that thin your blood, like aspirin and fish oil, to avoid bruising after the injections.

If your wrinkles or excessive sweating are causing difficulty in your social life or self-perception, call CSC Steil Dermatology for Botox injections today.
