What is vascular laser treatment?

Vascular laser treatment uses targeted light energy to heat and destroy unwanted blood vessels beneath your skin.

The laser emits a specific wavelength that hemoglobin in your blood absorbs while surrounding tissue remains unaffected. This causes the vessel walls to collapse, and your body gradually reabsorbs the treated vessels over the following weeks.

At CSC Steil Dermatology, the team uses advanced systems like the excel® V+ laser to treat superficial and deep vessels with precision.

What skin concerns can vascular laser treatment address?

Vascular lasers can improve several conditions caused by abnormal or damaged blood vessels:

  • Spider veins on the face and legs
  • Broken capillaries around the nose and cheeks
  • Facial redness and flushing from rosacea
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Port wine stains and vascular birthmarks
  • Venous lakes
  • Poikiloderma (red and brown discoloration on the neck and chest)

The treatment works on various areas, including your face, legs, chest, neck, and hands.

What happens during vascular laser treatment?

Your CSC Steil Dermatology provider cleanses the treatment area and may apply a cooling gel. They then pass the laser handpiece over your skin, delivering pulses of light energy to the targeted vessels. The device includes integrated cooling to protect your skin and minimize discomfort.

Most people describe the sensation as a quick snap or sting with each pulse. Sessions typically last 15–30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. No anesthesia is usually needed, though your provider may use a topical numbing cream for sensitive areas or larger treatments.

What should I expect after vascular laser treatment?

Your treated areas may appear red and slightly swollen immediately after treatment. Small facial vessels often disappear right away or within a few days. Larger or deeper vessels take longer to fade as your body gradually breaks them down and redirects blood flow to healthier veins.

Some bruising or temporary darkening of treated vessels can occur, especially with leg veins. Most people resume normal activities immediately, though you should avoid intense exercise and excessive heat for at least a few days.

Results vary based on the size and depth of vessels treated. Superficial concerns may improve after one session, while deeper or more extensive vascular issues typically require 2–4 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
