Kybella

Submental fullness — commonly called a double chin — can persist despite diet and exercise. The experienced dermatology team at CSC Steil Dermatology in Hinsdale and Downers Grove, Illinois, offers Kybella®, an FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells beneath the chin. Once these cells are gone, they can’t store fat again, which means results last without ongoing sessions. Call the friendly office today or use the online booking tool to schedule your Kybella consultation.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injectable treatment that uses synthetic deoxycholic acid to reduce fat beneath your chin. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that helps your body break down and absorb dietary fat. When injected into submental fat, it destroys fat cells permanently.

Once these cells are eliminated, they can't store fat again. This means results last without ongoing maintenance treatments once you've achieved the profile you want.

How does Kybella treatment work?

Your CSC Steil Dermatology provider marks a grid pattern on the skin beneath your chin to guide precise injection placement. They then administer multiple small injections spaced about one centimeter apart across the treatment area.

Each session typically involves 20–50 injections, depending on the amount of fat present and your goals.

The procedure takes about 15–20 minutes. Your provider may use numbing cream to minimize discomfort, though you may still feel some stinging during the injections.

How many Kybella treatments will I need?

Most people need multiple sessions to achieve their desired profile. You can receive up to six treatments, spaced at least one month apart. Your provider assesses the amount and distribution of fat beneath your chin and creates a personalized treatment plan based on your goals.

What should I expect after Kybella injections?

Swelling is the most common side effect. Expect your chin area to swell noticeably within hours of treatment. For most people, this subsides within 1–2 weeks, though some experience swelling for longer than a month.

Other common side effects include:

  • Bruising at injection sites
  • Numbness or tingling beneath the chin
  • Redness and tenderness
  • Firmness or hardness in the treatment area
  • Slight unevenness during healing

Plan your treatments with recovery time in mind and avoid scheduling close to important events.

Results develop gradually as your body clears away the destroyed fat cells. You should start seeing changes within a few weeks, with continued improvement over 2–3 months. Full results are usually visible about six months after you finish treatment.
